Long Beach Beaches Offer More Than a Day of Sand and Sun

November 3, 2009

Visiting a Long Beach beach is a fun excursion for families and couples visiting Southern California. Even the locals look forward to weekends spent near the ocean enjoying the sun, the sand and the shopping.

Bordered on one side by the Pacific ocean and protected by a breakwater, it’s a coastline unlike any other with gentle waters that allow a wide variety of water activities including sailing, kayaking, and swimming. A day at the shore is never more than a few miles away when you’re in Long Beach.

How you choose to spend your time at the coast is determined by what you like to do. There are three very different outdoor attractions no more than a few steps from the sand.

Belmont Shore’s main attraction is Second Street, a half-mile stretch of shops and restaurants that is perfect for an afternoon stroll. Only about four blocks from the ocean, it’s an easy walk in California sun. Play beach volleyball in the morning and then visit Belmont Shore for casual lunch or an ice cold coffee drink. In the evening, the street is one of the city’s happening spots. Thirty-somethings can be found dining al fresco all along the tree-lined corridor. Followed by the twenty-somethings who arrive for bar-hopping late into the night.

Shoreline Village is a waterfront center where the shopping, dining, and entertainment come ready-made. Visitors can eat overlooking the water, take a ride on a classic Merry-Go-Round, or listen to outdoor music from the real wooden boardwalk. Shoreline Village is also the landing point for most of the harbor cruises. Short afternoon cruises can be found for about the price of a movie. Or wait until the sun goes down for a romantic dinner cruise where you can watch the city lights from sea.

Bluff Park is a beautiful grassy plateau that overlooks the Long Beach beach. The park sits in the middle of a one-mile path about 150 feet above the sand. Visitors can walk or jog while enjoying the brisk sea breezes or travel down a staircase to reach the beach. Several local fitness groups meet at the park on weekends to workout. It’s the best view in town, and visitors are welcome to join in a class.

The Long Beach beach is known for its social atmosphere. It a bustling environment with just the right combination of attractions for any temperament. Amusement centers, shopping, or dining, this seaside city is sure to float your boat.
